I love how there's so much emphasis on the *science* of librarianship and information---on rational thought, on understanding, on balanced perspective, on research and empiricism. And yet, given the first opportunity, everyone's up in arms over some issue, emotionally decrying how unfair such and such a situation/decision is, hearts bleeding all over the damn place. There's no attempt for rational argument. There's no examination of how the given situation/decision fits into library ethics or social responsibility. That aspect of the conflict is just assumed.
And we all know what they say about assuming....
I wonder if being the sole conservative among my friends has allowed me to sharpen those rational-thought, empirical, second-guessing skills. Or maybe my heart just isn't inclined to bleed without serious examination of the bloodletting instrument.
