Whilst flitting about on Goodreads, I came across the book Bumped by Megan McCafferty. I've seen it at the library, and it seems to check out fairly often, so I thought I'd take a look at the summary:
Am I missing something? Is this book completely different from its summary? Or are modern readers just that unaware of The Handmaid's Tale? I'd think if you're a fan of dystopian novels, you'd want to read it. Or at least you'd be aware of its existence. Color me confused. (And amused: I seem to be posting mostly about books these days. Sorry 'bout that.)
I wonder...if I wrote a teen-ized retread of, say, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, would anyone even notice?
In 2036 New Jersey, when teens are expected to become fanatically religious wives and mothers or high-priced Surrogettes for couples made infertile by a widespread virus, 16-year-old identical twins Melody and Harmony find in one another the courage to believe they have choices. My immediate thought was, Oh, so it's like The Handmaid's Tale! Only...for teens? Curious, and a little appalled at how unashamedly similar it sounds to Margaret Atwood's book, I started reading reviews. I read through half the reviews on the first page and not one of them mentioned Atwood. Not one.
