I'm going to sit here in the hot golden hour, sip my cocktail, watch Sev attempt to teach his son catch-and-release fishing in our pond, and just be grateful that I'm here right now and that this is the world I get to sink into. I've folded the parchments into dragonflies today. If you let them dance a little while, they'll come to rest in your hands when they're ready. Happy Saturday and happy quizzes!

To Whom Does Your Heart Belong? |
I was loved very, very well growing up, thank you very much, quiz. Attachment theory has so much to answer for...if only its devotees would listen. Sigh. How I experience connection to other people has infinitely more to do with how my brain works and how I've learned to cope with my brain than it does my childhood. That said, I do indeed love very intensely when I love people, and it would have been very cool to be the sort of ancestor who leaves a romantic mystery behind when I die.

You're a Flapjack Octopus: The Innovative, Creative Dreamer! The flapjack octopus (Opisthoteuthis sp.) adapts to its surroundings and hunts in fascinating ways. They probe the seafloor with their small sucker discs and cirri, or finger-like filaments on their arms, to waft sea snot of other sediment and morsels hidden in the mud. These octopuses belong to a unique group called cirrate octopods which lack the ability to camouflage. So they simply hide in plain sight. With a unique appearance and graceful movements, this cephalopod captivates observers. Its pancake-shaped body and webbed arms enable effortless gliding through water, resembling a jellyfish when swimming and an umbrella when floating. |
What Deep Sea Critter Are You? |
I love octopuses! Elessar has suggested that my patronus would be an octopus because they, like me, are solitary, creative, and very smart, and while I think I'm less solitary—especially in my most joyful memories—than he thinks, I do think my deep sea alter ego could be an octopus. Especially with the way this one is characterized: playful, innovative, adventurous...and not so great at blending in. I only wish I were as skilled at hiding in plain sight as it is!

Which Fun Fictional Detective That You May or May Not Have Heard of Are You? |
Another result tapping into my intelligence and weirdness, but this one also calls out my big sister, warrior woman, I-will-cut-you vibes. Nice! I suppose those are good qualities for seeking justice, huh? Not that I want to quit my day job....

Design a Fantasy Outfit and I’ll Tell You What Kind of Magic You’d Wield |
More than 20 years ago, I had a fun conversation with my siblings and cousins about the kind of superheroes we would be. I don't remember all the details, but I do recall that I wanted the ability to see the future and mirrors were involved somehow. Fast forward about 10 years and one of my favorite online artists came up with a set of Disney princess superheroes. Belle, my favorite Disney princess, was characterized as a librarian by day (like me!) who uses the power of her magic mirror at night to show evildoers their own ugliness. And now this result, with mirrors showing up again. There is something already a little magical about mirrors, I think, in how the things they reflect seem tangible but are not and in the ways they fail to see the truth of things altogether in some respects. I love the idea of having magic that plays with that: concealment, illusion, reflection, light, all of that, yes, but also truth and the appearance of truth. No wonder this magic is easily weaponized. Or that its overuse can make you see things that aren't there.
