but if they can get published....
Alack! I am slain.

Well. Not really. But I'm rather irritated and, y'know, sort of suffering. Why are authors so cruel? For that matter, why are their editors? And I must have a positive talent for getting involved in a story, invested in its characters, only to discover that the author of said story and characters can't seem to carry them through to a conclusion.

How can you not realize half your bloody book is missing? What about those chaps you left buried under rubble in the middle of the story? What happened to them? And why do I care about her sister? I just met her in the last ten pages of the book. And what about that enemy she swore to destroy? And that chap she ended up with? You can't just fade to black as they start to come to an understanding! Bloody hell. I don't *want* your characters running around in my head for the rest of my life trying to come to some sort of proper finish.

Oy. There's not much point to being an excellent writer when you can't tell a story properly.

That's a very good point. You really need both the story and writing skills to be a good author. Usually, it seems like people have the story skills and not the writing skills. I think it's much rarer to run into someone who has the writing down, but can't seem to get the story together. I'm sorry there are characters running around in your head. You should call me and tell me how you would end the story and maybe they can escape that way.
