so should i read nascar romances now?
I attended my very first Nascar race today...and really, really, really liked it. Which is rather startling since, as you may already know, I don't like sports. Like at all. I mean, I like to run and I like to climb and I like to play flag football as long as no one's too serious about it, but watching sports? No. Not at all. I find most of it immensely boring.

But Nascar I liked. The roaring engines, the zooming cars, how quickly the race can change. I liked listening to the drivers and their spotters over the radio, and I liked how I could divide my attention between the race in front of me and the commentary and close-ups on the big screens. I'm sure it helped that I have a personal connection to Carl Edwards, one of the drivers. And I'm sure it helped that he won---yaaaaay!---but I think part of me just really wants to be down there driving with them.

Racing's complex and strategic, the drivers are constantly watching for openings and ways to get the most out of both the track and their cars. My inner speed demon---the one I have to rein in on highways---was gleefully anticipating and strategizing with them. *This* is not boring. I may not be able to enjoy watching it on TV, but I think I'm definitely interested in attending more races.

Ah, I see! I wondered if you'd met him or something though I couldn't figure out the situation where. It's nice to have a team/person to root for. Makes the sport a little more engaging.

I think I've always been sort of partial to football, but I think that's started with marching band in high school. But I'm not a baseball fan at all either. Too slow and boring, though I currently hang out with some huge baseball fans who tell me going to games is much more fun. I think it's because of the beer. :)

I'd think beer would make just about any sport better. Except maybe Notre Dame football. All those drunk fratboys...yikes! :) But I've been to minor league baseball games and didn't mind too much. Still not thrilling, but it's a little more intimate and engaging than major league or TV baseball. As for football, I like to watch it when I'm with a whole bunch of people, but I went to my first (and only) ND football game by myself...and I was so bored with all the stops and starts. But I'd think being part of the marching band would definitely give you a different perspective on the game.

And, yeah, no personal meeting with Carl Edwards---you'd have heard about that, since he's only a year older than us and not too shabby lookin' :D---but, believe me, my mom did tell him aaaall about me. And she did try to think of ways she could get us to meet. (Ironically, my objection at the time to just such a meeting was that I didn't care about cars...and I didn't like Nascar....)
