if coincidences are just coincidences...
I've spent today doing very little more than watching TV and reading, which is not precisely newsworthy, I know. But in both the book I was reading and one of the shows I watched, I stumbled on a description of quantum mechanics. That's not precisely newsworthy, either, except that the words used in both book and show were almost exactly the same:

"Matter is energy waiting to happen."
"The human body has enough energy to explode five hydrogen bombs."
"Most of us just aren't very good at releasing [that energy]."

It's quite possible, of course, that both the author of the book and the writers on the show were copying from the same beginners' guide to quantum mechanics, but the peculiar thing about quantum theory is that there's room within it for the metaphysical: specifically, in this case, synchronicity. Or, as some like to call it, All That Law of Attraction Crap.

I'm really not a believer in the Law of Attraction or related theories, but a coincidence like this does make me wonder. Are you trying to tell me something, universe? Are you ticked off that I don't think you're sending me messages? Or do you simply believe I should leave my librarian life behind to become a quantum physicist?

And how does Repo! The Genetic Opera fit in? I spent part of the day watching that, too....

I did. :D I thought it was a little rough in patches, and the gore and sexing-stuff-up was a touch gratuitous, but I enjoyed the experience. And I really, really love the concept of the whole thing. Have you seen it already?

It was a little rough. A little too much exposition. But I rather enjoyed it. If one looks at it like a rock opera, the gratuitousness makes more sense, I think.

I think it probably would have read better as a mini-series - there could have been more back story and less comic book-style telling (though, it was a good enough way to get the job done). But what station - TV or cable - would have picked up something sooo bloody and lascivious?

Me and Ian and Leigh and Sharne all watched it together. Shar thought it was ok, Leigh and I liked it, and Ian thought it sucked.

I completely agree about the exposition---it kept stopping and starting. And while I can totally see the rock opera = gratuitousness, I think I just wanted the sex and violence to feel a little more like art and little less like "We need blood! We need sex!" Something more like what you'd find in Sin City than in Saw.

And I think it'd be great as a miniseries, or even a television series. Think of the fun involved in watching all the characters continue to dance around each other. Creepy fun, granted, but fun all the same. :)

Creepy fun is fun. :)

I was kinda expecting (hoping for) more of a Sin City vibe to it. More art, less B-movie.

But I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Have you heard Music for Elevators - Anthony Stewart Head's CD? Good stuff!

I haven't heard Music for Elevators...but ::checks library catalog:: hmm. Not there. Maybe I can interlibrary-loan it? I loved his voice in Repo!, so more of it can only be good. :)

Both are good. The girl singing is Amber Benson - better known as Willow's girlfriend, Tara, on Buffy. And, of course, ASH reprising his role as Frank-n-furter - whom he played in an theatre version in London in '91.

You can completely tell he's had experience on stage---he looks so comfortable, even prancing around in heels and lacy stockings. :) And such a voice! I'm definitely going to have to see if I can ILL his CD....
