obvious? to everyone but me, apparently....
Did anyone know that a box is a literary metaphor for self-doubt? I did. At least, according to this review, I did. Which is why I used it, of course. Not because...well...boxes hold stuff. Not because I needed something to be stored and tupperware lacks a certain panache. Not because it made sense for my story. No. I used a box in my short story because I knew---on some deep, deep, *deep* subconscious level---that a box is a literary metaphor for self-doubt. Right.

This whole reading reviews of my story thing is endlessly fascinating. It's as though I'm in AP English again, analyzing William Carlos Williams' poor wet wheelbarrow for hints of Some Deep Meaning. I feel a little weirded-out, and yet oddly honored, that my writing is worthy of literary analysis.

But I don't think I'll ever be able to stick a box in a story again without pondering its metaphorical implications. Bugger.

Neener! Now you have to actually think about what you're writing instead of just letting it flow from your fingertips like a river of perfect diamonds.

Yeah, I don't know where that metaphor came from, either. Just go with it. :)

But I *like* my river of perfect diamonds! ::stamps foot:: I don't *wanna* think about what I'm writing! I won't! I won't, I won't, I *won't*!

I have to say it is so cool you are getting so much positive attention for this story. OTH, I always thought boxes were metaphors for confinement or oppression personally. I think I am going to stop reading the reviews. I am feeling the shinny new go away. I love reading these anthologies blind. And while I would be honored to have seen an advance copy of your piece. I am glad I am saving myself for the book itself. (no virginity jokes/metaphors about boxes either.) I am excitied! Looking forward to the release!

That's what I thought boxes would represent. Or maybe potential. Or danger. As with Pandora and her box. Never in a million years would I have put a box and self-doubt together. Eh. Oh, well.

As for the reviews, I completely understand. I stopped reading the reviews of everyone else's stories after the first two. It's much more fun to read a book or watch a movie without someone else's opinions cluttering your perceptions. And I'm sorry about the advance copy. The last time I tried to send you an email, I got a Mailer Daemon message, and since we communicate mostly on lj, I kept forgetting to ask for a working email address. :( I promise you'll have an advanced copy next time.

It's ok. No worries. Unless this would have been a nine million year wait, I'm excited for the book itself.

Box
I'm just glad that they stuck to the literary metaphors for "box", and not the 6th-grade-snicker-snicker-tee-hee meanings. That would have put a brand new spin on things... Love -Beatrice

I was thinking about AP English when I was reading your post too. I remember how hard we all seemed to argue that not everything had a deeper meaning and sometimes a box was just a box because it did hold stuff. But it's so strange to see people assume their analysis must be what you meant.

boxes schmoxes...shouldn't self-doubt be a closet? Then again you could do a lot with the analysis of closets and ironwood boxes. Giggle. You need to slap my hand the next time you see me.
