obvious? to everyone but me, apparently....
Did anyone know that a box is a literary metaphor for self-doubt? I did. At least, according to this review, I did. Which is why I used it, of course. Not because...well...boxes hold stuff. Not because I needed something to be stored and tupperware lacks a certain panache. Not because it made sense for my story. No. I used a box in my short story because I knew---on some deep, deep, *deep* subconscious level---that a box is a literary metaphor for self-doubt. Right.

This whole reading reviews of my story thing is endlessly fascinating. It's as though I'm in AP English again, analyzing William Carlos Williams' poor wet wheelbarrow for hints of Some Deep Meaning. I feel a little weirded-out, and yet oddly honored, that my writing is worthy of literary analysis.

But I don't think I'll ever be able to stick a box in a story again without pondering its metaphorical implications. Bugger.

That's what I thought boxes would represent. Or maybe potential. Or danger. As with Pandora and her box. Never in a million years would I have put a box and self-doubt together. Eh. Oh, well.

As for the reviews, I completely understand. I stopped reading the reviews of everyone else's stories after the first two. It's much more fun to read a book or watch a movie without someone else's opinions cluttering your perceptions. And I'm sorry about the advance copy. The last time I tried to send you an email, I got a Mailer Daemon message, and since we communicate mostly on lj, I kept forgetting to ask for a working email address. :( I promise you'll have an advanced copy next time.

It's ok. No worries. Unless this would have been a nine million year wait, I'm excited for the book itself.
