you raise me up?
Day 04: A genre you hate
Pop opera, aka operatic pop. I wish I had a nice, tidy explanation why this is so, but I'm really not sure why I dislike it so much. It may have something to do with those voices singing those songs---I'd much prefer operatic voices to sing opera and balladier voices to sing ballads. Or it could be that they're so schmaltzy and saccharine...except I love an embarrassing number of sappy songs. Or maybe it's that so many of them are power ballads? Only I do enjoy the occasional power ballad. Perhaps it's the combination of these things: maybe together they hit a spot on my psyche that results in knee-jerk revulsion.

They make me giggle too, and they make for great karaoke if you can hit all the notes. :D As for pop opera, that's when classically trained singers perform pop songs, usually Celine Dion-style power ballads. Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman, Paul Potts all fall into the pop opera category. Although they'll occasionally sing actual opera as well...which I like much, *much* better.

Ah, okay, gotcha. I'm not a huge fan of that type of music either! It seems like these singers with phenomenal voices are just downplaying their talent to appeal to a lowest common denominator.

I totally was going to ask what pop opera was too! Once you explained it, it seemed the perfect description.

I think most people have heard it; they just might not know that it's an actual genre of music. :) I think there must be a genre title for just about every sound out there these days....
