an interior smile
After 30 days of focusing on music, I find I'm having a little trouble letting go. In the interest of easing back into normal life---and normal lj entries---I have a meme. Yes. Another music meme. Just think of it as hair of the dog....

1. Reply to this post and I will assign you a letter.
2. List/upload five songs you love that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[livejournal.com profile] ludzu_alus, by way of a most complicated and charmingly random process involving a Robin McKinley book, has assigned me the letter E. After some thought, and perusal of my music collection, this is what I've come up with:
Almost all the songs that immediately came to mind were from the 80s or thereabouts. In fact, if you want an entirely 80s-ish playlist, just sub in "Everlasting Love" by Howard Jones and "Electric Blue" by Icehouse for the two more recent songs. Apparently the letter E was rather popular that decade.

Love Song: Howard Jones - Everlasting Love

Yay! And now it's my turn to indulge in a complicated and slightly less random means of coming up with a letter for you. In honor of your 30th birthday:

In my library, the book with the call number 102.07 (closest I could come, I'm afraid) is Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar. On the 80th page, the 30th word is "controlled."

Thus, your letter---so apt for Czarina---is C.

How awesome is the title /Plato and a Platypus walk Into a Bar/?

I know! And it's a pretty damn good intro to philosophy, too. I was surprised and delighted to find that was the book that corresponded to the call number I needed.

Can I have a letter? Pretty please? :)

Absolutely! And for your letter (I'm loving this part!):

I went looking for Pride & Prejudice, but my library's copy appears to be checked out. So I found the closest I could come to it: These Three Remain by Pamela Aidan. I found my favorite line---"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you"---and on that page, the 25th word is "hardly."

I thereby bequeath you the letter H.

Haha, I am loving the way you choose letters for people! *scurries off to do this meme*

P.S., you should really own your own copy of Pride and Prejudice. ;)

I do have a copy of Pride and Prejudice in my personal library, but the copy owned by the library I work at---where I went hunting for letters!---was checked out. Hardly surprising, that. Since it *is* an awesome book....

So, I know I'm late to this party, but I'd like a letter too!

Yay! Being late to the party just means I get to break out the champagne and confetti again. :) For you, dear сестра who I have known so long, I found Dealing with Dragons. And since the number 5 is fashionable in Linderwall, I went to the 5th paragraph on the 5th page of the 5th chapter (In Which Cimorene Receives a Formal Call from Her Companions in Dire Captivity). But since Cimorene abandons Linderwall in favor of a less structured existence, I did the sensible thing and simply poked my finger somewhere on the page. "Brushing" (as in "the dragon's scales") is your word. And B is your lovely letter!

Yay! I was curious what book you'd choose and it was perfect!

I'm reading Fables right now, and I listened to "Everybody Got Their Something," and I'd never have thought of that song to go with Fables, but it really does, at least the earlier ones. And I almost think it goes better with the Jack of Fables series. I'm going to have to listen to it when I read a new volume new too. :)

(And I also like The Pina Colada Song!)

Yay for the Piña Colada song! :) And, yes, the earlier Fables issues were the ones I read while listening to Nikka Costa's album. Although I may have misspoken a little: while "Everybody Got Their Something" fits the tone of the graphic novels, the song "Like a Feather" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiI_caFfquA) is what really, really reminds me of them. Something about it suits Rose Red, and since she plays a fairly prominent role in the first few issues, I can't help identifying Nikka Costa's music with the rest of the series.

Also, I found a couple 30-day memes for books---here (http://community.livejournal.com/book_memes/60412.html) and here (http://tbosky.livejournal.com/57551.html)---but I'm not sure which sort of questions suit the kind of book-sharing we want. I'm thinking we'll end up making our own meme, sampling a little of each, but which list has more of the kind of questions you'd want?
